Don Bluth Entertainment
Don Bluth Entertainment is a animation company created by same name, who brought you The Secret of NHM and The Land Before Time . Bluth is a Disney ex-animator who started his own animation company. I am guessing Disney didn’t see his full potential as a animator. Nowadays, people quitting their jobs and purchase self employment. Don’t worry I am one of them, who wants to work for myself not others. Thanks to Cov-19 Pandemic, I have self awareness on what purpose in my career and worth. Enough about that Don Bluth grace us with many other movies like An American Tail and Anastasia. But some of his films fell from grace and Don Bluth Entertainment was on the verge of bankrupt.
Due to the success of his three film, Bluth moves to arcade industry and pitch idea on knight saving a princess. Hence forth Dragon’s Lair, an interactive adventure on a laser disc. Dragon’s Lair is about a knight called Dirk the Daring who on a mission to save Princess Daphne from evil dragon. The opening attract explains overall story and goal of the game for beginners. During development of Dragon’s Lair, Bluth Entertainment had $3 billion and can’t afford voice actor nor models. Bluth decided to use employees to voice Dirk and Daphne instead. He does the animation and storyboard of the game. I don’t want to bored you with the other details. Don wanted to use laser disc capable of making interactive movie. Letting the player know what to go and death animation went they fail.
Dragon’s Lair and Others
Dragon’s Lair was a huge success in arcade market in 1983. The series spawn several sequels such as Time Warp and Curse of Modread. Along with Ruby-Spears cartoon show like Mega Man and others video game TV shows. There was suppose to be a live action movie in the works with Ryan Reynolds. Dragon’s Lair indiegogo was successful but we don’t know went it will be developed or cancelled. The game also made cameos in tv shows and appeared in Nostalgia Critic with Don himself. After Dragon’s Lair success, there is another game called “Space Ace”. Space Ace is about a Ace who is a hero that saves dansel in distress Kimberly from Commander Borf. Commander Borf wants to take over the earth and use Infant Ray to turn Ace into teenage.
There are other games is trying to capture Space Ace and Dragon’s Lair essences. In Japan, there is laserdisc games like Cliff Hanger (Lupin the 3rd), Time Gal and Ninja Hayate. Those games I remember having the same gameplay as Dragon’s Lair but maybe more. Let me know in the comment about missing Laserdisc games. That being said, I haven’t seen anything like it and did played Dragon’s Lair. Let just say I don’t have the best experience and kept dying lol. I had have fun with the game and grew up with Don Bluth movies in the 90s. Bluth always was involved in I-Ninja and Tapper World Tour. We don’t know what Don Bluth is up to now. I am hoping for the new Dragon’s Lair move is coming soon than we think.
Don Bluth entertainment didn’t make alot of games but they’re hits. Dragon’s Lair will be in any 80s and 90s kids hearts. You gotta love him drawing style with dark atmosphere and lighting. I don’t know no one come close to Don in my opinion. Even some of his movie was not good but a great animator. You can see Bluth getting interviewed by people on YouTube and creators talking about his work. I still remember the song “There No Cats in America” because it’s memorable. What about Sharptooth chasing Littlefoot and others? I didn’t like the other The Land Before Time movies after that one. A YouTuber Raisorblade reviews other movies check him out. I haven’t seen Secret of NHM growing up but later on and love it. Heard there is a television series or new movie of The Secret of NHM being developed.
I don’t know about other films like A Troll in Central Park, Rockadoddle and Titan AE. Well Bluth Entertainment made some good movies in its prime. We will not see other game like Dragon’s Lair nor Space Ace ever. I might be wrong and indie game developer might try to replicate it. What are your thoughts on Don Bluth in gaming?
