VR Troopers Summary

VR Troopers is a Tokusatsu action show developed by Toei Company and Saban Entertainment that aired in September 3, 1994. The show uses several stock footage from their Japanese counterpart such as Superhuman Machine Metalder, Space Sheriff Shaider and Dimension Warrior Spelban. These three series are from Metal Hero series and main characters uses these suits. Here is a plot summary of VR Trooper, our protagonists JB, Kaitlin and Ryan Steel is fighting forces of Grimlord. Grimlord is a evil being with army of mutant robots in another dimension. In order to fight against Grimlord, our heroes seek help from Professor Hart who work with Ryan’s father. Dr. Hart assist out protagonists with VR technology and helping them transform into heroes. One of our lead characters, Ryan Steele is searching for his missing father throughout the show.

Ryan, Kaitlin and JB

In four part episode “Defending Darkheart”, Ryan finds out that his dad was brainwashed by Grimlord. Darkheart was Grimlord finest warrior and later on betrays them to fight alongside Ryan. Later on in part 4, Tyler Steel was captured again and Grimlord wants his knowledge to create more powerful warriors. That’s what another four part episode “The Quest for Power” comes in.  Tyler Steele is captured by Grimlord and it’s up to our three major character to save him. Ryan Steele goes to Grimlord domain and to his dad with Jeb the talking dog. Later on JB and Kaitlin along Tyler Steele is  about to be laser to death. Ryan fight off Grimlord and save his friends, don’t worry the battle doesn’t end there.

Moving back to the characters, there is JB who is Ryan friend and tech genius of the group. Kaitlin who works at a newspaper company called Underground Voice Daily. Jeb who got zapped while in Prof Hart lab and has the ability to talk. Tao who trains JB and Ryan on Martial Arts. Woody who is Kaitlin’s boss who is very goofy indeed. Prof Hart who works with Tyler Steele on VR technology. Our main antagonist of the show Karl Ziktor, who runs a business called “Ziktor Industries” and his only employees are woman. When Ziktor is alone, he transform into Grimlock chanting “forces of darkness empower me, take me back to my reality”. He is transports to his lair and mutant warriors chant “ all halt Grimlord”. There is also minor character in the show that server as a foil and supporting.

Doom Master and Vixens

The show follows the same format as Power Rangers monster of the week.  There are episode parts like Red Python that’s important to the plot of the show. It’s the same stick like any other Super Sentai show. Where JB, Ryan and Kaitlin chant “Trooper Transform” and fight the bad guy. Don’t figure the weapons, vehicles and super abilities like Lighting Hand.  There is alot of slapstick in this show and it’s cater to younger audience. Fight sequence is very abysmal with sloppy camera work and slow down which feels sluggish. Don’t forget the cheesy dialogue and cartoonish effect in the show. Although we don’t see out heroes fight Grimlord in the last episode nor find his truth identity. The viewers will know but our protagonists doesn’t but never brought up again.

Closing

There is some anime voice actors in this show like Wendlee Lee, Micheal Sorich and many others. Fun fact: did you know Jason David Frank was supposed to be in this show and wasn’t named VR Trooper but Cybertron. VR Troopers does talk inspiration from Power Range such as their supporting characters. Hart is Zordon and Jeb acts like Alpha 5. Aside from that VR Troopers run for season two with new villains such as Doom Master and Despera. Don’t forget the foot soldiers Skugs, who can only be defeated went touching each other. In season two, Grimlord gets a new fortress and looks but love his old one better. Ryan gets a new suit and many more characters are introduce. In my opinion, VR Troopers is not a great job but something to laugh at. If you love Super Sentai and VR even the whole concept was disappointing.

Grimlord

I understand it was the 90s and didn’t have technology to create virtual world that look like real world. The creators could have created a CGI world that doesn’t look real life. I was confuse about virtual reality and real life in this show but give it a pass. VR Trooper is available on Dvd along with Sega Genesis video game.
