Xiaolin Chronicles is a reboot of 2003 Xiaolin Showdown tv series. There is some changes from the previous show like Wuya and Dashi origin. The major voice actors being changed due to Canadian citizen. Tara Strong reprise her role as Omi along with re-design of the character (will get to that later). CGI Xiaolin Showdown instead of 2D form which is a turn off. That being said, Xiaolin Chronicles is not the best reboot of the past show. Well the plot is still the same as other one. Four shaolin monks Kumiko, Omi, Raimundo and Clay find Shen Gong Wu which are magical artifacts that grant powers. Shaolin Monks must face villains like Wuya, Chase Yong and other Heylians from acquiring Shen Gong Wu. The format is the same, two or more warriors touch the Shen Gong Wu triggers a showdown.
Once Xiaolin Shodown starts they say Gong YI Tanpai meaning Ready Set Go in Chinese. Depending on the warrior choice in game and grabs Shen Gong Wu first wins. But each warriors have to wager their own Shen Gong Wu to partake in Xiaolin Showdown. In Xiaolin Chronicle, the monks are now Shoku warrior not Wudai like the last show. There is some new faces as well like Ping Pong and Shadow in the series. Each monk have their elements Clay (earth), Kumiko (fire), Raimundo (wind) and Omi (water). Ping Pong is light but enough about that let get to episode 5 Tokyo Madness.
In the start of the episode Dojo is dreaming about flying with Grand Master Fung. Kumiko tries out hairstyles with Medusa comb while Raimundo, Clay, Ping Pong and Omi watches. Kumiko gets a news flash about her Dad in Oku about earthquake. She cries about her dad and didn’t tell him that she left. Kumiko says her Dad only cares about his projects then her while Dojo sleeps. While other monks is training, Kumiko uses Blue Mantis Ray to fly to Tokyo. Meanwhile Jack Spicer uses a digital worm to hack around the world. Kumiko meets with her dad and he talks about experiment while she was little girl Moshi. Kumiko and her Dad goes into digital Tokyo afterwards Jack hacks into the program. Dojo and the rest of Shaolin monks goes after Kumiko.
Ping Pong discovered Honey Badger Sheng Gong Wu and it’s abilities can turns anything to reality. Shaolin boys fight against Tubbimura and Jack Spicer. Jack Spicer gets the Honey Badger with figure skating. Kumiko convinces her Dad to shut the program down. But her Dad told her, there is nothing to worry about and refuses. Jack Spicer reveals himself saying he uses a Doomworm to hack into their systems. He wants to turn virtual reality into reality with Honey Badger Sheng Gong Wu. Kumiko must go inside Digital Tokyo to retrieve a black box to shut the program down. Shaolin boys explains to Dr. Toho about Honey Badger Sheng Gon Wu. Jack uses the Sheng Gon Wu to make building disappear.
Kumiko catches Jack Spicer and her communicator is breaking. Shaolin boys goes to save Kumiko with energy boost from Dr. Toho. If Kumiko doesn’t find the black box she and other monks will be trapped forever. Kumiko finds the black box in a Moshi bear shop, while Shaolin boys fight Jack Spicer. She gets the black box and the password was Moshi Bear 5. There is two buttons one can wipe out the architecture and other is reboot. Kumiko press the reboot button and uses the Medusa Comb to give Jack pigtails. The Shaolin monks escape the virtual reality Tokyo under 30 mins. The episode ends where virtual world is saved and her dad shut down the program. Her dad gives her special rock from a volcano as a gift.
Jack is running from a virtual avatar. The episode is a Kumiko-centic due to her past and relationship with her dad. We didn’t get that in previous show but now we know. This episode revolves around VR which does tie-in with video games. I know this is a video game only blog but technology and VR co-exist in the industry. That’s out of the way, episode is not bad at all. We know why Kumiko left to join the Shaolin Temple. I love Kumiko as a character strong and independent sometimes feisty. Jack is more whiny than other show. Dr. Toho is a big tech Asian stereotype but Japan does have advance technology than us. At the end, Kumiko save the day and repair the relationship with her dad.
Other than that, Xiaolin Chronicles is not all bad show. It has some flaws that I didn’t like but gave them credit for trying. Re-designs of the character is hit and miss like Dojo not being green but yellow. What are your thoughts on the episode? Let me know in the comments below or social media.
