Kamen Rider Ex Aid Summary

Kamen Rider Ex Aid is 18th entry of the Tokusatsu series with the same name. Note: This is my first Kamen Rider show I ever watched. But I have heard of the American version called Masked Rider.  Kamen Rider Ex Aid plot is about a intern named Emu Honjou who save was saved by Hinata Kotaroyu ( sorry if it misspelled). Hinata gave Emu an handheld console because he loves to play video games. Years later, Emu become a intern at Seito University Hospital. Later on, Emu learns about a video game virus that effect patients at the Hospital. This disease is called “Game Syndrome” which is cause by stress.  The more stress the patient has the worst it gets. Once that happens, a monster called Bugster reaches level one. If Bugster is not destroyed, the patient will die and disappeared.

One day, Emu chases after a kid patient and bumps into GEMN assistant Asuna (later on reveal to be a video game character called Poppy). The kid mutates into a level 1 Bugster and Emu grabs the Game Driver to transform into Kamen Rider Ex Aid. This form is based off 2D platformer called Mighty Action X. Later on, there are other Kamen Riders who different forms based video game genres as well. Such as Kamen Rider Sniper, which is based on arcade shoot em up Bang Bang Shooter.  Kamen Brave is based on RPG called Taddle Quest. Lastly, Kamen Rider Lazer, which is based on racing game called Bakusho Bike.  Emu is not the only one who is compatible with Kamen Rider Game Drive and Gachats. There are other characters like  Hiro who is a rival surgeon and foil to Emu.

Hanaya who is a former GR doctor and also a anti hero of the show. Kiriya who friend die and in hands of one of the main antagonist Graphit (along with Hiro girlfriend Saki).  Speaking of the main antagonist, one of them is Dan Kotoro the head of video game company Gemn. Dan also create the Gachats and 10 video games which result in bugs. Kamen Rider monsters is based on video games genres as well. Our heroes can level up and defeat them using critical strike and  finishers. Throughout the episodes Emu wants to save all patients but some tell em he can’t. Emu is a klutz and enjoy making patients happy. He is a gamer and saving a life is not a game to him. He is also known as gaming genius M.

Emu does conflict with characters and willing to work with people. We do get some backstory on how the Bugster virus came about. There is one villains that works with Graphit and Dan but yet to be reveal later one. Kamen Rider Ex Aid has cartoonish and slapstick moment due to younger audience. Don’t let me talk about the effect in this series. Kamen Rider Ex Aid does have video game references such as Super Mario and Super Famicom (SNES). You might see a Dance Dance Revolution  reference in one episode.  Aid does follow the format of other Tokusatsu or Super Sentai series. We have a Bugster of the week and no filler episodes because viewers don’t want to miss something important.

Closing

Ex Aid has some cheesy effect and dated CGI. I love the transformations which is very quick and enjoyable. Better than Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure and other magical girl transformation I have seen. I love the transformation voice went the characters turn into their perspective forms. The show has some funny moments and acting that will spill out your popcorn. For my first viewing of a Kamen Rider series, this was fun indeed. Storyline is very deep and we get character development in the process. But one character does die but I will not say who. Just keep watching and find out yourself.
