Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is a crossover fighting game developed by Midway Games before filling for bankruptcy. The game features two franchises Mortal Kombat and DC Comics currently licensed by Warner Bros. Plot of the game is about two universes fighting against one another fuel by rage. This rage is causes by a being called Dark Kahn. Dark Kahn is a being consist of Shao Kahn and Darksied. The two universes find out the source of the problem and stop Dark Kahn. Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe has the same gameplay like Mortal Kombat Deception. There is some new mechanics added in the game like multi-layer stages. MK Vs DC have some fatalities but not all the characters. DC Comics characters like The Flash, Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman have Heroic Brutalities.
Villains like The Joker, Lex Luthor, Catwoman and Deathstroke have fatalities. MK characters still have their perspective fatalities. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe has over 20 characters included Shao Kahn and Darkseid. In story mode, there are chapters for each character excepted for Kano and Baraka. Each characters is fuel by rage and force to fight their friend or foe. In the game, you will see some interaction that will make you laugh and cry sometimes. There is a huge problem with this crossover is that Justice League characters don’t kill. This was stated in the comics, animated series and MK Vs DC game as well. In my opinion, Justice League characters didn’t fit in MK universe. When this first was released in 2009, I was stoked to see Mortal Kombat fight Justice League.
Was This A Mistake
After playing the game on PlayStation 3 I was dishearted by this crossover. I was not a huge fan of Mortal Kombat being in 3D. Mortal Kombat 4 was a huge part of my childhood growing up. After MK 4 , NetherRealm Studios released Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance in 2002 and I had mixed reaction about it. Of course I played all way to Mortal Kombat Armageddon and NetherRealm Studios hit the reset button. NetherRealm Studios released in Mortal Kombat 2011 reboot that retells the story from MK 1 and 3.
MK 2011 brought me back to the franchise again. Enough about that, let get back on topic. Due to success of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, Raiden and Sub-Zero makes a special appearance on Injustice 2. The Joker makes an appearance on Mortal Kombat 11, both games makes reference to Dark Kahn. When I found out I was dumbfounded and was shocked.
Speaking of Injustice, NetherRealm Studios released their own DC Comics fighting game. I am guessing that MK Vs DC Universe opens door to Injustice. I have to give them credit for that. Fun fact: Warner Bros made some animated movies for DC Comics and Mortal Kombat. I did reviews on Batman Assault on Arkham and Mortal Kombat Scorpion’s Revenge on this blog. Make sure to check them both out. Was making Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe an mistake? Some may argue that went this game didn’t exist Injustice won’t been created. I understand some fans had mixed reaction to this game. There was no gore in this game that some gamers was not happy with. Well Midway Games at the time wanted to cater to younger audience and tone down violence. Is this game still good? Probably, maybe it’s still worth checking for replay value and online.
Mortal Kombat 2011 video game is available on Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC and PS Vita. Deadly Alliance is available on PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance and Xbox.
