Doki Doki Literature Club – Dark Visual Novel Video Game Review
What is Doki Doki Literature Club?
Doki Doki Literature Club is a dark visual novel game developed by Team Salvato. The game depicts typical anime troupe of a high school club. Even if it’s your standard visual novel format but with mini-games. Doki Doki is about unnamed protagonist joins a literature club. His childhood friend named Sayori persuades him to join. After agreeing to visit the Literature Club. He meets three other girls Yuri, Monika and Natsuki. Each girl have anime troupe and stereotypes. Natsuki is a tsundere, who enjoy anything cute and makes pastries. Yuri, a timid girl with like dark novels. Monika is the perfect student idoi and head of Literature Club. Sayori is the anime childhood friend and a clumsy girl. Monika wants to get more people to join the club.
School festival is approaching and the Literature Club must make an impression. During development of the game Dan Salvato, spent two years working on Doki Doki Literature Club. Salvato also worked on FrankerFaceZ extension for Twitch and modding in Super Smash Bros. He stated “love-hate relationship with anime as inspiration for creating the game”. Dan wants to incorporate horror elements which is inspired by. Salvato cited “things that are scary because they make you uncomfortable, not because they shove scary-looking things in your face”. He is talking about mixing light and dark atmosphere in the game.
What makes the game good?
That’s what makes the game so unique in a way. Normally visual novel have a light ending and stick to one motif. It quickly changes from lighthearted to dark towards climax. The game have elements of Psychological horror and depression. While in your time of the Literature Club, you interact with four girls. Go home and write poems on which girl likes best. Each girl have different routes and multiple endings. There is not voice acting in the game what so ever. Save and load part of the game. Gallery is to view CGs images in-game. Doki Doki Literature Club reminds me of Puella Magi Madoka Magica with slice of life.
This game gains a cult following and popular visual novel game. Dan Salvato might make a sequel to this game. As a fan of anime and visual novels. It really surprise me how direction of the game is going. Every troupe of anime is presented in the game. There is harem, horror and school life elements. Doki Doki doesn’t neglect anime cliché’ at all. First half of Doki Doki is sets the mood to relaxing. Rest of the game slowly turns paranormal. I highly recommended getting this game for anime visual novel players. Doki Doki Literature Club is available now for free on Steam.
