BlazBlue Alter Memory is a fighting game based on Arc System Works. The series adaptation of BlazBlue Calamity Trigger and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. It’s somehow similar to Guilty Gear gameplay and fighting style. Various colorful cast of characters to choose from and roles in the game. Storyline begins in 2199 when humanity is almost destroy by the Black beast. Luckily six heroes vanish the Black Beast. Later, a renegade outlaw Ragna the Bloodedge is attempting to eradicate Librarium. Novus Orbis Librarium put out the largest bounty on Ragna and labeled SS class criminal. Ragna is one of the key characters along with Noel Vermillion in Blazblue. He has backstory about his family and childhood. In the game, Ragna meets his brother Jin and Saya (Noel). Jin is adopted into Kisaragi family along with Noel. Not only Ragna acquired Azure Grimoire but Noel with secrets of her own. After Memory doesn’t cover the facts about Ragna and Noel. Does BlazBlue Alter Memory related to the game?
Terumi is working as a double agent for NOL under new name Hazama. The anime is missing some minor parts from source material. The character traits and personality are present in Alter Memory. One thing troubles me about what characters called their weapons. In BlazBlue video game, weapons are known as Nox Nyctores but anime called them Arc Enemy. All the events of the video game are present. Jin have an obsession on fighting Ragna and wielding Yukinasa. Noel finding Ragna and find more about herself. Major characters Tsubaki Yayoi, Makoto Nanaya Rachel Alucard and Lambda-11 had bigger roles. The rest got less screen time in the anime.
The animation is done by Hoods Entertainment, who work on Drifters, The Qwaser of Stigmata and Mysterious Girlfriend X. Character design is more expressive making more like the source material. Music score is thrilling and melodramatic. Character theme make its way to the anime. BlazBlue does feature gag segments in the game. Talking a break and seriousness on the storyline. In one episode Taokaka, Noel, Ragna, Litchi and Rachel goes to hot spring. The rest of the anime is serious with one funny moment. I am guess developers doesn’t have time to cram light-heartiness in the anime. The rest of the episodes forces on Noel and Ragna.
Hazana orders Noel to find Ragna but gets sidetracked. She eventually meets Ragna and share heart to heart moment. Toward the end of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, Noel cries on Ragna to be reckless. Noel sisterly instinct kicks in. Ragna see his sister Saya inside of Noel and feels to protect her. Ragna and Noel relationship is more sibling-like. Saya is not in Noel but Nu-13 and Hades Izanami. She is a Murakumo and Master unit for destruction of humanity. Rachel Alucard acts more of an overseer thought the series.
Countless characters Kokonoe, Carl Clover and Arakune tried to hunt Ragna’s Azure Grimoire. Noel is meets her classmates Makoto Nanaya and Tsubaki Yayoi. Both Makoto and Tsubaki wants to capture Ragan but Noel serves as a wedge between them. Kokonoe reanimates a replica of Nu-13 goes by the name Lambda-11. Tsubaki is completely manipulates by Terumi and Izanami to fight Noel. Ragna and Jin teams up to stop Mu-12 from going berserk. BlazBlue Alter Memory is a small recap of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift storyline. In my opinion, play BlazBlue: Continuum Shift to get a grasp of the plot. BlazBlue: Central Fiction recaps event from Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift. Buy BlazBlue Alter Memory DvD and Blu-ray on Amazon.
